Plan Around the Infrastructure That Exists

Over the past decade, much of what people once took for granted in Venezuela has grown unreliable. The grid fails often. Water comes and goes. Fuel can be hard to find, and connectivity is patchy, more so the farther you get from the cities. In a remote village high in the Andes, these are not separate inconveniences. They stack. The power drops, so the pump stops, so the water never reaches the tank. The internet flickers, so an order cannot be confirmed. A day of work turns into a day of waiting, and for a family earning a wage, a day of waiting is lost income.

We have watched small failures compound into real harm. A cold room warms up and a batch of food is at risk. A payment cannot go through and the buyer moves on. This is nobody's doing. It is simply what happens when the ground beneath the work keeps shifting. So we made a decision early: we would not build the work on top of systems we cannot count on.

Terra sits on a finca in Aldea Gavidia, above the town of Mucuchies in Merida, at roughly 11,150 feet, near Sierra Nevada National Park. It already has what it needs to stand on its own. Solar panels are installed. Satellite internet is working. A natural spring gives clean water. Above the finca lies the paramo, that rare high grassland where the frailejon stores water and releases it slowly, a natural water tower. And we are finishing the warehouse, the galpon, so supplies and product have a place on site, and the work inside keeps going when the service outside stutters.

This is not about turning our backs on public infrastructure. Public systems have a real strength, which is scale, and we hope they recover. But we cannot ask a family to stake their wages on a grid that may or may not hold. So we plan around the infrastructure that actually exists, right here on the property, and we put the first venture, a mushroom production facility in the galpon, on ground we control. The cool days, cold nights, strong light, and clean water are already ours. Our job is to make sure the power, the water, and the connection are ours too.
